Southern Cross University

Ten students from varying disciplines took part in community engaged projects through the New Colombo Plan Scholarships. Our team on Nusa Penida produced a range of projects to encourage positive, nondestructive tourism on the island.

Summaries of projects

With only two weeks on the island in June, 2014, the scale and depth of our projects were quickly reconsidered with a heavy focus on providing information for tourists and future students, taking into account cultural sensitivity. Kerryn and I created this website as our project: Kerryn complied information on the Friends of the National Parks Foundation, while I complied information on our student projects, blog and activities sections, set up the web address and design as well as provided the images. Lachlan and Michael put together a tourist day trip guide for Nusa Penida, based on locations visited while on guided tours with FNPF staff and notes from fellow students. Jackie, as well as helping with rubbish collection and helping with research for a number of projects, wrote a report on some of the main attractions including Crystal Bay (Penida Beach), Manta Point, Broken Beach, and the Natural Springs. Jamie created a visitor’s brochure and map of the island due to the lack of information available, both online and hardcopy, of the island’s layout and attractions. The map served as an easy-to-read resource for any tourist, regardless of their level of English, with small pictures used as symbols. Scout’s project was also largely based on visual information; she developed signage for the temples to inform tourists of culturally appropriate clothing. Corrine addressed the major rubbish issue on the island, focusing on community attitudes and methods of waste disposal . She based this information on data collected from surveys she created which were translated into Bahasa Indonesian and handed out to locals.
