 Temples and Cultural Awareness

The island has predominantly Hindu religious traditions with beliefs and practices resonating throughout the community. The local community is extremely polite, and has many traditions incorporated into everyday lifestyle. Offerings are presented on a daily basis to a family temple, while events such as full moons will draw the community to the local village temples to celebrate.
Nusa Penida is renowned for not only Hindu, but Buddhist pilgrimages, as the people from Bali, as well as all of Indonesia, will come to the island to fulfill there religious commitments in the range of absolutely beautiful temples available for prayer. The temples offer a peaceful place for prayer and meditation, however the whole island itself presents a range of peaceful places such as waterfalls and sacred beaches which are often used for meditation. There are many many temples available for visiting on the island:

  • Dalem Ped, located in Bodong, Desa Ped. This is the largest temple on the island, and the most commonly used. The Umanis Anggarakasih Prangbakat, a sacred Balinese ceremony held every 210 days is often celebrated in this temple.
  • Goa Karangsari Temple, located in Desa Kerangsari/Suana. This is also known as Cave Temple, and is exactly what the name suggests, 3 temples within a large cave, with smaller caverns inside for meditation.
  • Puncak Mundi Temple, located in Klumpu. This temple, also known as “Mountain Temple” is located at the highest point on Nusa Penida, around 520 metres above sea level.

Some other temples on the island are Dalem Bungkut, located in Bodong and Dalem Dias Muntig , located in Banajar Nyuh, Desa Ped.
